Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.

— C.G. Jung

The only constant in life is change

Because everything is constantly changing, we are continuously confronted with adjustments. Relationships come and go, as do jobs, life stages, and roles. The changes we go through in life can be exciting, yet simultaneously frightening and painful. We may be thrilled, yet also terrified, of beginning a career, changing careers, becoming a new parent, or entering a new relationship. Many changes are often exclusively painful on their own, such as when grieving losses or enduring trauma.

Many of us go through traumas that affect how we function and how we adapt to life’s changes. We may respond to situations with anxiety, develop depression, struggle with low-self-esteem, or engage in self-sabotage. Traumas can completely shake up our sense of self and worldview, leaving us in a state of groundlessness. Yet traumas can also occur in more subtle, insidious ways, leading to unconscious internalized beliefs that affect our functioning throughout life. Dimensions of our identity, when stigmatized and marginalized, can contribute complex layers of trauma that affect the very core of who we are.

Fortunately, despite the trauma we may endure, we also carry internal resources, strengths, and capacities for healing and growth. We are born to be resilient. And our traumas themselves offer the grounds for the richest, most profound healing and transformation. Captured poetically by Rumi, “The wound is where the light enters you.”

About me & my approach

I’m Allie. I serve as a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern (IMH21261), and I work primarily with adolescents and adults who suffer from anxiety, depression, trauma, identity issues, and relationship difficulties. I graduated from Columbia University with a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling, and prior to that, received degrees in Human Communication and Sociology with a minor in Leadership Studies from the University of Central Florida. A majority of my clinical experience has focused on serving individuals from marginalized and underserved communities across the country, including Miami, Orlando, [near] Los Angeles, and New York City. As the daughter of immigrants, my multicultural background and diverse clinical experiences have been an asset when working with issues of identity and complex trauma. I am also fluent in Spanish.

My approach focuses on helping clients develop self-understanding and learn practical skills. I believe education is a form of empowerment, so I frequently infuse opportunities for clients to learn about psychological concepts that can help them understand their own experience. I also incorporate mindfulness and self-compassion techniques, which help clients become more present and less harsh on themselves. Overall, my style of counseling can be described as supportive, empowering, and insightful. I genuinely love my job, and I’m grateful for each opportunity to cross paths with, and support, a fellow human being.
